COPPOCK Ruth C. (nee Croasdale), age 91, of Media, PA on September 12, 2017. Ruth was born in 1925 with her twin sister Rachel. Ruth and Rachel were the youngest of nine children in a tight knit Quaker family, growing up in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. She attended Lower Merion High School where she excelled at field hockey and French. After graduation in 1943 she went to work for Provident Trust Bank in Philadelphia. She later worked for David C. Clem in Philadelphia through the 40’s. She fell in love with a young engineer just out of the navy and she and Tom Coppock were married at Merion Friends Meeting on October 2, 1948. In the years following her vows to Tom she became a homemaker devoted to family, friends and community. She enjoyed regular cookouts, vacations and holiday gatherings with her extended family. For years she joined her sisters, brothers and their children at the Pink House in Cape May for two weeks of summer fun. Always the athlete, Ruth would show the men how to do a proper handstand on the beach. At 40, she took up tennis which quickly became an enduring passion, not only for the joy of the game, but also for the close, devoted friends that she made at Idle Hour Tennis Club. Ruth’s “Friday Night Tennis” group remains a loyal group of good friends. Over the years Ruth had many pets and loved each one dearly. Her love of animals extended to all of the birds, squirrels and other creatures that shared her environment, and many of them became very devoted to the generous food supplies that she constantly provided to them. The children of Dermond Road knew that when they found an injured bird, Ruth was the neighborhood surrogate mom for traumatized creatures, and a number of them were returned to the wild under her care. Ruth was a founding member of the Pilgrim Gardens Civic Association, an organization formed to stop imminent environmental threats to the neighborhood. She was also active in the League of Women Voters and township political campaigns. Ruth made a group of close friends in her 36 years of volunteer work at Riddle Memorial Hospital, continuing her service there with determination into the last six months of her life. Beloved wife of the late Thomas William Coppock and loving mother of Paul C. Coppock (Alison), David S. Coppock (Clare) and Roberta Trainor (James).
