GIRVIN Philip (Phil), beloved husband to Carol Ann, proud father of Pamela, Gwyneth, and Matthew, brother to Sandy, and devoted grandfather to Lauren, Cameron, John, and Nathan, passed away July 9 at his home in Media, Pa, surrounded by family. He was 76. Born in Portland, Maine, he received his BS in Business from Pennsylvania Military College and Executive MBA from Harvard University. He served in the U.S. Marines (where he received several awards, including “Best in Platoon”), and then served in U.S. Marine Reserves. An astute business executive gifted in building highly profitable, growth-oriented businesses that inspired employees to innovate and reach their full potential, Phil started on the ground floor at Philadelphia Resins and rose through the ranks to become President. After an acquisition by Illinois Tool Works, Phil was promoted to President of the ITW Engineered Polymer Business Group Worldwide, acquiring and managing over 15 companies globally. As a Christian businessman, he always put people first, protecting the livelihoods of working families in contrast to the profit-driving M&A culture of the time. Phil lived a rich, full life centered on connecting with family and friends – marrying his high school sweetheart and raising a family with her, sharing super-kart racing with his son, cruising the Chesapeake Bay with his family on a classic 8-meter yacht that he restored, and contributing to the classic car show community with his beloved Shelby Cobra. A modern renaissance man, he could make or fix just about anything and was sought out by many for his sage advice and generosity. Phil loved his family and friends with selflessness, kindness, and steadfastness, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Services are being held at Kish Funeral Home (2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall, PA 19008) July 19th, including a visitation (9-11am), funeral (11am-12pm) and reception (12pm-1pm). When I think of Phil, there are certain images that accompany those thoughts; at family gatherings, celebrating a special event, or photos of him on his boat, or on the road as i waved as he drove by in his beloved Shelby. But, of all those memories, the one thing I remember more vividly is what a strong character he possessed.
Phil will always be in my thoughts.

I will remember your Phil for his indomitable strength of will. But most of all, I will remember the important words of encouragement he gave me with a difficult life decision and I will try to borrow some of his bravery when I need some fortitude at my back. During a very windy storm, part of the cover he had blew off and hit our boat. Phil's repair was of expert quality and during that time we established an acquaintance.
I always enjoyed seeing him at the club and the conversations we had that ranged from boats to Cobra's and other topics.
Phil was the consummate gentleman and I will miss him.
My best to Carol and the family. Stay strong, Phil would want that.
